Politics & Government

Student Exercises

  1. Students follow the latest political races through the MPR's ongoing coverage. Students read and listen to the latest stories related to political races on the main MPR News site or through the special campaign site found within the "Politics and Government" section. See Campaign 2006, for example, to find background information on the key candidates in each race, special interviews and reports related to the race, audio files from various candidate debates, and links to related Web sites.
  2. As part of a study of the political advertisements, students view the featured ads and read through the Ad Watch commentary and critique section. They also read, view, and listen to ads from archives of previous years. Then students write their own critique of an ad, following the style and format of an Ad Watch critique, write a letter to a candidate or party, commenting on the ad, or create their own ad for their favorite candidate.
  3. Students find in-depth coverage of the current (or most recent) legislative session. The site includes links to special reports, ongoing news coverage, whole sections dedicated to important issues, a slideshow of "major players" in the session, and links to related government sites. Students use this resource to learn about the main issues of the session or as a resource for research on a particular policy issue.
  4. When preparing for a debate, mock legislative session, or mock political campaign, students find resources throughout the MPR News site.
  5. Students read and critique listener commentary published in the "Your Voice" section of the MPR News site. The Soapbox is moderated, meaning that an editor reviews submissions before posting them to the MPR Web site. It is not recommended that students submit commentaries when personal information is required.

Tips and Techniques

  • See the "Politics and Government" section of the main MPR News site to find links to the comprehensive MPR sites focused on the current legislative session, the current statewide political races, and other "hot" issues in the state.
  • Remember to have students cite sources for information or quotations they use in reports, multimedia documents, or other educational projects, including photos and audio clips. Students should include the following information in their citation: document title or description, date of publication or when they found it on the Web, an address (URL), and, if possible, the author, photographer, or artist.
