Student Exercises

  1. Students listen to portions of various A Prairie Home Companion shows, view related photos, and read the scripts. Students either browse through the various shows, or teachers select a series of sketches for students to listen to, respond to, analyze, and critique. Possible series include the following: Ketchup Advisory Board commercials, Guy Noir scripts, The Lives of the Cowboys, or sketches that highlight sound effects.
  2. Students create and perform their own radio sketches, based on examples from various A Prairie Home Companion shows. After reviewing and analyzing a type of sketch (for example, the ones that highlight sound effects), students work in a group to explore various sound effects, write and rehearse a script, tape (and re-tape) a performance, and then play their sketch for an audience.

Tips and Techniques

  • Select a month on the "Show Archive" dropdown menu and click "Go" to browse through the archives of past shows. Each archived performance includes a complete rundown of the program, audio clips of most portions, scripts for the sketches and song lyrics, photos taken during the show, and other information about the performers.
  • Bookmark specific shows or clips that you will be using with students.
  • Remember to have students cite sources for information or quotations they use in reports, multimedia documents, or other educational projects, including photos and audio clips. Students should include the following information in their citation: document title or description, date of publication or when they found it on the Web, an address (URL), and, if possible, the author, photographer, or artist.
